New Covenants in Our Time

One of the striking things about the deployment of covenants in Scripture is the way that each covenant is worked out in the context of the time in question. Whether or not you think of the covenant between God and Adam/Eve, God and Noah/all creatures, God and Abraham/Sarah, God and all humanity in Jesus, as historical events in our modern sense, there are very particular circumstances surrounding each of these Scriptural narratives. Underlying them all is a sense of God’s faithfulness, and willingness to renew or begin afresh. Today’s artwork from the Visual Commentary on Scripture is a contemporary light sculpture based upon the symbol of the rainbow. It’s a striking visual demonstration that God’s covenant with all creatures is renewed in every age, and is particular to that age.

I hope you enjoy the commentary and the image, found here.

Thinking of how the covenant is renewed or reframed, here’s a contemporary reworking of the piece from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons that we heard yesterday. Max Richter’s “Four Seasons Recomposed” seems to me a good symbol for our evolving relationship with God. Some things endure, but it’s not exactly the same. So, here’s “Spring”, the second movement, with twists!
